Teaching expat kids Mandarin

As an expat kid who wants to learn Mandarin...

One of my student is an 8-year-old Indian boy.

He came from Bomby to Hong Kong with his family last year, and studied in a famous International school. He was smart and diligent, good at all other subjects except Mandarin, since Chinese / Mandarin was a total new subject for him. His mom found me for help.

I first taught him pinyin and four tones. "c" and "k" are easy to be confused perhaps due to the influence of English IPA. The second and third tones also seems difficult but still can be mastered.

Then, I taught him strokes and simplified characters, which can be easily remembered when one knows the meaning and the structure of characters.

At the same time, we have daily topics (such as greetings, thanks, food) and his interested topics (such as cricket, football, computer games). I provide some keywords and ask him to make sentences, where he can learn the use of words as well as Chinese grammars.

Half a year past, he Now ranks 2nd in his class in Mandarin. Now he can several hundreds of Chinese words and sentences. I will teach him more about pinyin (such as the change of tones, the light tone, the er words) and more Chinese words and grammars.
